A happy opportunity to use Baskerville, and for the glorious antique numerals, its ‘Expert’ variant. Ground breaking in its day (1757) it has since acquired a gravitas in keeping with the subject of this story.

Malcolm Crowthers, the photographer, took advantage of the construction of Portcullis House, to get these shots of the whole Palace. Ignoring safety rules he persuaded the builders to let him dangle in a bucket hanging from a crane. An illegal shot of our legislature. The inset is at sunrise, the main image, soon afterwards.

The variety of Baskerville’s weights make clear distinctions, here between: parliamentary events; monarchs; national events and prime ministers.

As reference for drawing this plan I was given, without any security clearance, plans of every floor throughout the entire complex in minute detail. Quite unnecessarily these including all basement levels. Short memories?
