Front cover: ‘Chairman of the Board’. If only for its humour this image took first prize. But uncompromising the san serif titling and the back cover layout announce Barnardo’s place in the modern world.

Brief: Tom Barnardo’s powerfully nineteenth-century images, brilliantly effective in their time, were not to completely dominate the book. Current images were to intersperse the text throughout. Abandoning the idea of children homes as a wrong path was only one of its better-known changes of direction. This is an organisation that deals realistically with a very gritty present.
